What is a digital vignette?
A digital vignette, also known as an e-vignette, is an electronic alternative to the traditional toll sticker. Vignettes are most often mandatory to be used by motor vehicles whose permissible total weight does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Every country has its own list of motorways and road sections where the vignette is obligatory.
Digital vignettes have eliminated the need to affix a physical sticker to the vehicle’s windscreen. Thanks to the e-vignette, the respective vehicle’s license plate is electronically stored and controlled by the system of cameras located on the sections of roads subject to toll.
The e-vignette can be easily purchased online using any electronic device with an Internet connection. After covering the service fee, a vignette confirmation will be emailed to the buyer.
Depending on the country and driver’s traveling needs, vignettes can have various validity periods. They are usually valid for one week, a month, or a year.
How does an e-vignette work?
An e-vignette works in the same way as a traditional vignette. The only difference is that a digital vignette is automatically linked to the vehicle license plates, while a physical toll sticker is assigned to a particular vehicle.
The camera systems control the vehicles traveling on the toll roads and verify whether they possess a valid vignette. A driver who uses the highways or road sections subject to toll without a vignette may be fined. The fines differ depending on the country.
