About Vignette Types in Bulgaria
Bulgarian vignette types are available in two different forms for foreign travelers – a traditional toll road sticker and a digital online vignette. Remember to select a suitable vignette depending on your vehicle class and the time period you wish to spend in Bulgaria.
If you are going to use the motorways and expressways in Bulgaria, you should obtain a suitable Bulgarian vignette before the journey. The vignette serves as a tool to collect tax payments for the toll roads and ensure timely maintenance works on Bulgarian high-speed routes.
However, there is no need to search for special kiosks that sell the traditional toll sticker – you can purchase the mandatory digital vignette for Bulgaria online. The electronic vignette will be linked to the license plate number of your vehicle. You will receive a confirmation at your e-mail address.
During the application process, you may select one of many available Bulgarian e-vignette types. Their validity periods vary from 7 days up to 3 months. You can also purchase an annual vignette.
Bulgaria vignette types
There are two types of vignettes for Bulgaria – a traditional sticker and an online vignette.
Vignette online
The Bulgarian electronic vignette (BGTOLL) has been available since 2019. You can purchase the e-vignette online – complete the form with your vehicle details and cover the fee payment. You will receive the confirmation at your e-mail. Your vignette will become valid immediately (unless you have selected another date for the toll activation).
Vignette sticker
The Bulgarian toll sticker used to be very popular in the past, but nowadays, it has been gradually replaced by the digital vignette. It is still available at a few selected kiosks on the Bulgarian toll roads, but according to the local authorities, the vignette sticker for Bulgaria may not be available in the future.
Bulgarian vignette types according to vehicle category
Depending on the vehicle you are driving and the time you wish to spend in Bulgaria, purchase a suitable vignette. Vehicles with a maximum gross weight under 3.5t are eligible for an electronic vignette (e-vignette), while drivers of buses and trucks should use the Route Pass system.
Vehicles under 3.5t (cars)
It is mandatory to have a valid vignette while using Bulgarian motorways and expressways. You can also be stopped by the officers for routine toll control on lower-class roads.

Vehicles under 3.5t (trailers)
Trailers towed by vehicles weighing up to 3.5t do not require a vignette as long as the total weight of the vehicle combination exceeds 3.5t. Remember about a valid mark for the trailer.

Vehicles over 3.5t (trucks, buses)
If driving a vehicle over 3.5t, you should use a distance-based toll system instead of a typical e-vignette. All you need to do is purchase a special measuring unit and install it in your vehicle – it will calculate the distance traveled and estimate the amount due.
To cover the fee payment for using the Bulgarian high-speed roads, you need a Route Pass. It is a prepaid card issued for drivers of vehicles weighing over 3.5t. Once purchased, it remains valid for 24 hours.
