When to buy a vignette before entering Hungarian toll roads
In order to use Hungary toll roads, you must obtain a Hungarian vignette before the drive. The process is very simple; provide the information in the system, cover the fee, and wait for the confirmation that will be sent directly to you (by email or phone number).
You are not allowed to use Hungarian motorways without a valid vignette. In this case, you will face a fine depending on the car type: drivers of D1/D2 vehicles must cover 16 220 Ft fine within 60 days (or 64 850 Ft if the fee is not paid within 60 days).
Drivers of B2 vehicles must pay a 72 950 Ft fee (or 291 770 Ft if the payment is not made on time). The deadline begins on the date the fine notice is received.
Speed limits in Hungary
In Hungary, the following speed limits apply:
Motorcycles, passenger cars, vans
- urban: 50 km/h
- rural highways: 90 km/h
- rural expressways: 110 km/h
- freeways: 130 km/h
Cars and vans with trailers
- urban: 50 km/h
- rural highways: 70 km/h
- rural expressways: 80 km/h
- freeways: 80 km/h
Heaving goods vehicles (over 3.5 t)
- urban: 50 km/h
- rural highways: 70 km/h
- rural expressways: 70 km/h
- freeways: 80 km/h
Buses
- urban: 50 km/h
- rural highways: 70 km/h
- rural expressways: 70 km/h
- freeways: 80 km/h
Some multiple-lane urban roads can have higher speed limits (60, 70, or 80 km/h). Note that the residential neighborhoods usually are in 30 km/h zones. You can also come across higher speed limits on rural highways (110 km/h or 100 km/h).
