The vignette roads in Switzerland are where drivers of certain vehicles must cover the toll tax to drive in Switzerland. Roads with mandatory usage of a valid vignette
As a rule, all motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5t require a vignette on Swiss highways and expressways marked with white-green signs. In turn, vehicles exceeding 3.5t must cover the heavy vehicle toll measured based on the mileage. Below, you will find a map and a list including all Swiss highways and other roads subject to tolls:
- A1 – From St. Margrethen (near the Austrian border) to Geneva, passing through Zurich, Bern, and Lausanne.
- A2 – From Basel to Chiasso, passing through Lucerne, Bellinzona, and Lugano.
- A3 – From Basel to Zurich.
- A4 – From Schaffhausen to Zurich.
- A5 – From Yverdon-les-Bains to Neuchâtel.
- A6 – From Bern to Biel/Bienne.
- A7 – From Winterthur to Kreuzlingen.
- A8 – From Lausanne to Geneva.
- A9 – From Lausanne to the Italian border.
- A12 – From Bern to Vevey.
- A13 – From Sargans to Bellinzona.
- A14 – From Zofingen to Olten.
Additional toll road sections in Switzerland
Even though the Swiss motorway vignette can be used almost on all Swiss roads and in most tunnels, two tunnels require covering additional toll:
- The San Bernardino tunnel
- The Munt la Schera tunnel at Livigno
Also, additional fees may apply when using:
- Some ferries
- The Oberaar panorama road at the Grimsel pass
- Car trains
When to buy a vignette before entering Switzerland toll roads
In general, you should buy a vignette before entering the Swiss toll roads. Since the vignette can be obtained online, you can easily purchase a Swiss vignette using your mobile device. If you did not manage to obtain a Swiss vignette before entering Switzerland, you can still do it either online or at one of the vignette sales points.
Do remember that driving on toll-subject roads in Switzerland may result in a fine of CHF 200 plus the cost of the vignette itself.
There are also some exceptions when a vignette is unnecessary if you leave the motorway at the first exit. These vignette-free customs offices include:
- Basel/St Louis motorway;
- Rheinfelden motorway;
- Kreuzlingen motorway.
Speed limits in Switzerland
Switzerland is probably the country with the most extensive and strict ticketing system in Europe or even in the world. Driving over the speed limit is categorically not recommended in Switzerland.
General speed limits in Switzerland include:
- Outside the village: 80 km/h
- On the road for vehicles: 100 km/h
- On the highway: 120 km/h
Drivers who do not obey the speed limits should be aware of very high financial penalties or even prison sentences (1-4 years). Excessive speeding may also result in disqualification from driving for 2 years and the necessity to pass a traffic psychology test to have it back.
