About Switzerland Vignette Types
Switzerland vignette types can be distinguished according to the way of their purchase and use, validity period, and the vehicle category.
Switzerland implemented a vignette obligation for all motor vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 t on all toll roads (Swiss motorways and national roads class 1 and 2). If taking a trailer or a caravan, drivers are required to purchase an additional vignette.
There are two types of vignettes according to how they are obtained and used: an e-vignette and a sticker vignette. An electronic vignette can be obtained entirely online, while a sticker vignette can be purchased at one of the physical sale points.
There is only one option of the validity period – an annual vignette that stays valid for 14 months and becomes effective from the date of issue.
It is also necessary to choose a vignette for a proper type of vehicle – motor vehicles, trailers, or motorbikes.
Types of Swiss vignette according to the purchasing method
Drivers can buy an e-vignette or a sticker vignette for Switzerland. Everyone can choose on their own which type of Swiss vignette to purchase.
Electronic vignette
A new e-vignette for Switzerland is a digital vignette that has been introduced on 1 August 2023. The process of purchasing an electronic vignette is carried out online.
A driver must complete a registration form providing some personal details, as well as vehicle’s plate number and country of origin and make the online payment. A valid vignette confirmation will then be sent to the email address entered in the form. A Swiss e-vignette is digitally connected to the vehicle’s plane number.
Sticker vignette
A toll sticker can be obtained at post offices, most petrol stations and garages, TCS outlets, and from driver and vehicle licensing offices.
A sticker vignette for motor vehicles should be affixed on the inside of the windscreen in a place that can easily be seen from outside the vehicle. If a vehicle does not have a windscreen, or it is a trailer or motorbike, a sticker must be placed on an easily accessible and non-removable part.
In the case of a broken windscreen, a replacement vignette will be issued free of charge.
Vignette types according to the validity period
In terms of the vignette validity period, there is only one type of a Swiss vignette – an annual vignette, since short-term options (such as a weekly/monthly vignette used in the EU countries) are not available.
An annual vignette for Switzerland remains valid for 14 months. The validity period starts from 1 December of the year prior to that shown on the vignette through to 31 January of the year following that on the vignette. For example, the 2024 vignette will be available from 1 December 2023.
Types of vignettes depending on the vehicle category
During the process of purchasing a Swiss vignette, it is necessary to choose between three categories of vehicles:
- Motor vehicles (passenger cars, delivery vans, light articulated lorries, light and heavy work vehicles)
- Trailers under 3.5 t
- Motorbikes
Drivers of vehicles over 3.5 t do not need a motorway vignette. Instead, they have to pay a heavy vehicle fee.
