About Austrian Vignette Types

There are two types of the Austrian vignette. You can obtain a traditional toll sticker on the road or purchase the digital vignette online. Then, you should select a suitable toll for your vehicle class – there are different vignettes issued for vehicles under 3.5t and over 3.5t.

The Austria vignette is a special document allowing travelers to freely use Austrian motorways and expressways. Because of the toll system, you do not need to pay for each highway separately – your valid vignette will serve as evidence of paying the road tax.

You can obtain the Austrian vignette online instead of a regular toll sticker. All you need to do is complete the application form with the essential data and make the payment for the processing fee. Once you are done, the vignette will be sent to your e-mail. It will be linked to your license plate number.

There are different validity periods for the Austrian online vignette – during the application procedure, choose a vignette that will stay effective for 15 days or 60 days. You can also purchase an annual vignette.

Vignette sticker

The Austria vignette in the form of a special toll sticker may be purchased at the special ASFINAG toll shop, but it is also available at automobile clubs, post offices, and petrol stations. You should obtain it on arrival to Austria, but it is also available in neighboring countries near border crossings.

Once you have your Austrian toll sticker, you should place it on the windshield of your vehicle. It must be visible for the control check. Other placement of the sticker will result a fine.

Austrian vignette validity

Depending on the type of vehicle you are driving and the time period you would like to spend abroad, you should obtain a suitable vignette for Austria. You should also take into consideration the maximum gross vehicle weight (under 3.5t or over 3.5t).

Vehicles under 3.5t (motorbikes)

Vehicles over 3.5t (buses, lorries)

Driving a vehicle that weighs over 3.5t, it is essential to use the Go Box system instead of the traditional Austrian vignette. You must install a special measuring unit in your car that will calculate the driven distance and the due payment. The fee you should pay will differ depending on the vehicle’s emission class.

IMPORTANT! There are a few highways that require you to pay an additional vignette fee because they are considered high-maintenance roads. If you would like to use motorways and expressways A9, A10, A11, A13, or S16, a regular toll sticker or digital vignette will be insufficient.
