Austrian Vignette Control

Vignette Control in Austria

All you need to know about vignette control in Austria.

Vignette inspection in Austria

The Austrian vignette control aims to prove you have paid the obligatory road tax. It is mandatory for all travelers who plan on using the motorways and expressways in Austria. Without a valid vignette, you can only use the free routes. The collected money is used for maintenance works on the Austrian highways.

Remember that during your journey to Austria, you may be stopped by the Service and Control (SKD) officers to perform a toll check. Their job is to verify if all the drivers have valid vignettes. If you fail to present an official car toll sticker, you will be fined.

Members of the Service and Control team can also ask you to present some additional documentation. You may be required to provide them with your ID card or vehicle registration document.

Additionally, your vignette in Austria will be verified through the AVK camera system. If you purchased a digital toll sticker, it will be linked electronically to the registration number of your vehicle. The cameras will check your license plate and verify the validity of your digital vignette.

On average, the placement of the cameras is changed every week. The system stores images of all passing vehicles, including their license plate numbers and windscreen pictures, to check for a valid toll.

Fines and penalties

If you are using the Austrian expressways without a valid toll sticker and you are stopped for control by the SKD officers, you will be required to pay a pricey penalty. Unless you cover the fine on time, a criminal proceeding will be initiated.

Keep in mind the Service and Control members can take the necessary steps to prevent you from driving on paid highways of Austria – they may apply wheel clamps to your car or confiscate your documents.

The fine that must be paid depends on the type of vehicle you are driving and the transportation rules you did not abide by. Below, you can find more information on current Austrian toll sticker penalties:

Vehicles under 3.5t (motorbikes)

  • Lack of vignette or expired vignette – 65 EUR
  • Tampering with the toll sticker – 130 EUR

Vehicles under 3.5t (cars)

  • Lack of vignette or expired vignette – 120 EUR
  • Tampering with the toll sticker – 240 EUR

Vehicles over 3.5t

  • Lack of Go Box or insufficient credit – 240 EUR

NOTE! Once the fine is imposed, you may pay the fee for the route toll within 5 hours or 100 kilometers. If the penalty remains unpaid, you will receive an administrative penalty of up to 3,000 EUR.

Vignette exemption

There are a few road stretches in Austria that do not require you to purchase a digital vignette or a traditional toll sticker. According to the Federal Roads Toll Act, the following highways are vignette-free:

  • A9 Pyhrn motorway – toll station Bosruck und Gleinalm
  • A10 Tauern motorway – toll station St. Michael
  • A11 Karawanken motorway – toll station Rosenbach
  • A13 Brenner motorway – toll station Schönberg
  • S16 Arlberg expressway – toll station St. Jakob
