Information about Vignette Control in Czech
The Czech vignette control is performed by the Czech Republic Police and Customs Administration, which checks whether a vehicle has a valid electronic vignette or whether it is exempted from the toll requirement.
The vignette control is carried out on the paid road sections by the patrol vehicles equipped with a system of cameras detecting the license plates of the vehicles. The system is remotely linked with control checkpoints. Moreover, the vehicle can be controlled at a parking lot or motorway service stations.
Failure to obtain a valid electronic vignette before entering the Czech highways may be quite an expensive experience. The fine for driving in the Czech Republic without a valid vignette starts from CZK 5,000 up to CZK 20,000.
All drivers are recommended to obtain electronic vignettes at least a few days before the planned trip through the Czech Republic to ensure a hassle-free drive.
The digital vignette requirement applies to all vehicles with at least four wheels with a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5t. This requirement does not apply to trailers and motorbikes.
Fines and penalties
The fines and penalties for driving without a valid vignette in the Czech Republic or abusing its exemption are as follows:
- Lack of a valid digital vignette: Drivers of vehicles without a valid electronic vignette (unless exempted) may be fined up to CZK 20,000.
- Abuse of vignette exemption: If an individual submits a toll exemption notice without being entitled to it, they are subject to a fine of up to CZK 100,000. Also, using tolled highway sections without filing a toll exemption notice may result in a fine of up to CZK 5,000. The fine of the same amount (CZK 5,000) applies to individuals who fail to notify the State Transportation Infrastructure Fund within 10 working days about the cessation of the reason required to exempt the vehicle from the toll.
Toll exempt vehicles
From January 2021, the following vehicle types are toll exempted:
- electric vehicles
- hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles
- transport of certain individuals, including vehicles operated by homes for handicapped persons
- historic vehicles with a historic vehicle license and special license plate
Important: The toll exemption applies to vehicles powered by hydrogen, electricity, or a hybrid fuel system as long as CO2 emission is less than 50g/km.
Electronic toll for vehicles over 3.5t
For vehicles exceeding 3.5t, the Czech Republic introduced the toll system MYTO CZ. The toll applies on highways and first-class roads and is charged according to the vehicle. A driver should remember to buy a special device with a GPS system to be able to measure the kilometers driven in the Czech Republic. Based on the distance driver, they will know how much they need to pay.
Buses have a reduced rate. The toll exemption applies in similar cases as for e-vignette exemption for vehicles not exceeding 3.5t.
