Romanian Roads Requiring Vignettes
Vignette Roads in Romania
It is essential to know which roads in Romania you must have a vignette on.
Roads with mandatory usage of a valid vignette
Vignette roads in Romania are the roads where a vignette is required. Romania toll roads are A-motorways, DN-national roads, and expressways. As a motor vehicle driver, you must buy an electronic vignette. The procedure consists of three steps: providing information, covering the fee, and waiting for approval.
Motorways in Romania are identified by A and number. In December 2022, there were 996 km of motorways, and the road development project is under construction. The vignette here is mandatory (only motorcycles are the exception). Besides, you must have a vignette on expressways identified by the DEx and number symbol.
National roads (marked by DN and number) also require a vignette. This includes European routes and highways of a total length of 17,873 km in 2019. Note that most national roads are single-carriageways (only 12.5% are dual-carriageways).

When to buy a vignette before entering Romanian toll roads
According to the National Company for Road Infrastructure Management, a Romanian vignette must be purchased before using the toll roads. Prepare for your trip earlier and obtain all necessary documents.
You can buy a vignette online or at sales points (like gas stations). There are several types of vignettes in Romania according to the vehicle and validity period. You can buy a 1-day, a 7-day, a 30-day, a 90-day, or a 12-month vignette (remember that a 1-day vignette is not available for A and B categories of vehicles).

The standard Romanian speed limits are as follows:

Note that the speed limits can be different on specific road sections. Also, the 100 km/h speed limit outside the village applies only to roads of national expressways or European roads (E85) status.
